BORACAY Random Notes By Noel Cabobos

Is the apparent water discoloration on the famous white beach of Boracay Island starting to tell us of the still unexplained phenomenon of algae growth during the summer months is going to happen soon?

This morning, a group of experts from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) conducted a test on the water quality of the front beach and although result showed that the coliform level is only 14mpn which passes the water quality of Class “B” or swimmable standards, they too are quite in quandary about the recent phenomenon.

“We have no idea yet where it comes from. Even the former LGU marine biologist, Mr. Haron Deo Vargas, has no specific way to explain the phenomenon,” he further said in an exclusive interview with Boracay Random Notes.

The same official surmised that the phenomenon could be marine planktons congregating in that particular area of the front beach near the Willy’s Rock, which he said is also quite the same in the Bulabog side at the back beach.

“We really can’t understand as of now but we have requested scientists from the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau who are scheduled to arrive this Friday (January 24) to do water analysis as well,” said a government official who asked not to be named.

Sign of green algae coming?

Normally, the green algae comes during the hot, summer season. Local folks would even tell that the growth of the green algae would signal the arrival of hot season on the island since the algae rapidly multiply and thrives in sunlight.

In recent years, however, the green algae comes as early as January in what is likely the result of changing weather patterns.
