Coronavirus disease COVID-19 spreads and now a pandemic according to the World Health Organization (WHO). One way to contain or to minimize any contribution to the spread of the virus is through home quarantine.
On March 17, 2020, The Philippine government steps up its measures on how to contain the spread of the coronavirus through an “Enhanced Community Quarantine”.
Now home quarantine is strictly imposed and observed.
In other countries, thousands are already living in semi-voluntary home quarantine, and more and more companies are asking employees to work from home.
This may not sound too good for a lot of people, because of the feeling of being contained, tight and bored. Anxiety and other mental health disorder might be associated with being quarantined inside your home.
It can also cause cabin fever which refers to the distressing claustrophobic irritability or restlessness experienced when a person, or group, is stuck at an isolated location or in confined quarters for an extended period.
To help you avoid it, here are the 7 things you can do while at home quarantine. Supporting your health, safety, and well-being.
1. Reconnecting with your family.
In an everyday common household, where parents go to work and children go to school, there might not be enough time for you to interact with your family members.
Being in-home quarantine gives you the perfect opportunity to communicate with one another. You can know more about your own and others’ emotions on family matters. You can discuss and talk about it to improve your relationships.
Talking and reminiscing the good old days is also such a good idea. Looking back to those special memories that you all enjoy together can help a positive, strong, and healthy relationships.
Playing board games with your family members, or playing a network mobile game app with them can enjoyably pass-by the time.
2. Eating healthy foods together with your family.
Eating together as a family has declined over the years. Because of our busy schedules, it has taken the time to prepare healthy, home-cooked meals.
This is the best time you can cook and eat together, not only that this brings togetherness it also helps increase your family’s health, both physically and emotionally.
And if you are parents doing it together, teach the kids about nutrition and give them an appreciation for healthier foods.
This activity can help unify the family. Enjoying the food you all helped prepared at the table.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
You might probably not have the time to do thorough home cleaning. The countertops left dusty, shoes untidy, bookshelves unorganized or often just looking at your disaster-stricken closet, this is the perfect moment to face it all.
You will now have all the time to check every detail and every corner of your home.
You can do some redecorating, change of wallpaper or simply getting rid of stuff that clutters the area. You might be shocked how big your space is when all that junk is thrown away. “Getting rid of pieces of stuff that doesn’t spark joy in your life“ as Marie Kondo says.
You can follow the KonMari’s method and learn how to let go of these things. And sooner, you too would enjoy the process of cleaning.
4. Having a good night sleep.
When people get less than 6 to 7 hours of sleep each night, they are at a greater risk of developing diseases.
Sleep is a time to relax, it enables our body to repair and makes it fit and ready for the next day. Sleeping keeps our heart healthy and reduces stress. This is the best time for our, tired and sleep-deprived body to have our much-awaited goodnight sleep.
No need to worry waking up too early just to catch-up with the traffic going to your work or school. Yes!
5. Quality time for yourself.
It is important to spend some time for ourselves and most cases work prevents us from doing so. Thanks to home quarantine, the much anticipated “me” time is here.
One benefit of spending quality time on yourself is that you can look at your personal life and see what you can improve. You can ask yourself this question, “What one thing could you do in your personal and professional life that, if you did it regularly, would make a tremendous positive difference in your life?”. These can be the effectiveness of proactive work, important goals, planning, and prevention or relationship building. You can read this book, “The 7 habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey.
Another is that it can boost your creativity, spending time lets your brain wander. A reason why most artists and musicians prefer to isolate themselves when working.
Whether through arts and music, through dance, writing, cooking or exercising. The options are endless, it is your time to do something for yourself.
Lastly, it can bring you peace. Be attentive to your mind, what are you constantly thinking about. One method to help you is through meditation.
A study conducted by PubMed states that meditation can help reduce your stress, develop concentration and can clear your mind. It is a habitual process to train your mind to focus.
6. Learn something new.
In continuation to the previous number, learning something new is another way to spend some quality time for yourself and your family.
Learning a new hobby like Do It Yourself (DIY) activities of building, modifying or repairing things without the direct aid of experts or professionals can add to your new skill.
And according to the World Economic Forum, skills involving creativity, critical thinking, people management and problem-solving are some of the skills people would want to learn in this year 2020.
7. Stay calm and keep informed.
And above all, we must remember not to panic in this time of crisis, just stay calm.
Panicking won’t do anything helpful so does listening to emotionally driven posts or news. Read or listen only to credible sources such as press releases from the World Health Organization (WHO), Department of Health (DOH) and trusted News Agencies.
Please know that our National and Local Government and other institutions are working together in helping to eliminate the virus. One thing we can do is to #StayAtHome.
Always remember to maintain social distancing, and wash your hands. This too will come to pass. Let’s hope and pray for the health and safety of everyone.
