BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan — The Philippine Red Cross-Boracay Malay Chapter will be holding its annual lifeguard training starting on June 20 in a bid to prevent drowning cases in this resort island.

The nine-day training will be provided especially for employees of hotels and resorts with swimming pools as well as to the beachfront establishments, said Rona Liza Inocencio, officer-in-charge of the PRC chapter.

Inocencio said the activity will consist of standard first aid training followed by a lifeguard provider’s course.

She said the Red Cross has started its annual lifeguard training course in November 2012 as part of its advocacy to prevent drowning cases in the island.

From November 2012 to June 2016, when lifeguard services of the island was still under the Red Cross, they have recorded 357 near drowning and active drowning cases or an average of 62 cases per year.

She said they target to train at least 20 new lifeguards this year.

She meanwhile encouraged Boracay establishments to have at least one trained lifeguards to protect their guests and to help in emergency cases.

Recently, the Philippine Coast Guard in the island has also advised business establishments here to have their respective lifeguards in preparation for the rainy and “habagat” season here.
