Former Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani passes away at 87

Former Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani, sister of former President Fidel V. Ramos, passed away at the age of 87 on Monday morning, March 20.
Her daughter, Lila Shahani, Secretary General of the Philippine National Commission to UNESCO, confirmed her mother passed away at 2:40 a.m. following a month-long stay in the intensive care unit (ICU).
In a statement, Lila said: “Bereft and full of grief, but still strangely peaceful in the knowledge that she is now free from all suffering.”
The former senator acquired infections and pneumonia during her confinement. She was supposed to have chemotherapy for her Stage 4 colon cancer, according to ABS-CBN News.
Ramos-Shahani was elected as senator in 1987. She headed the committees on foreign affairs, culture and arts, education and agriculture. Also, she was a member of the Commission on Appointments.
President Rodrigo Duterte appointed her as the member of the Board of Directors of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan.
The former Senator was married to a former Indian writer and professor, Ranjee Shahani, with whom she has 3 children.
