Construction and improvement of the 4.1-kilometer main road which is part of the first phase of the island’s rehabilitation is already 80 percent done, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, in an interview on Saturday, said the 4.1-kilometer road particularly from Cagban Port to Elizalde Property in Station 1, with a budget of P490 million will be completely done by the first week of December.

Villar said the remaining works involves only the “finishing touches” including the concreting of road and construction of sidewalks.
He stressed that the hard part, which is the installation of the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes for the island’s drainage system has already been completed.

Portions of the 4.1-kilometer road has already been opened during the island’s reopening on October 26. Though the phase I of the road rehabilitation has not been completed by the reopening on Friday, Villar stressed that “they are not delayed.”

“It is a big accomplishment to finish a 4.1 kilometer road with a complete drainage in just six months even on a rainy season,” he said.
Villar said the rainy season during the six months closure period was a big challenge during the rehabilitation.

During the six months island closure DPWH has also completed the Bulabog road, which is part of the island’s circumferential road. The new Bulabog road opened to public last October 15 now serves as alternate route going to Mt. Luho and Barangay Yapak.

Meanwhile, Villar said the next phase of the road rehabilitation will start by the first quarter of next year. The second phase of the rehabilitation will include road rehabilitation and improvement of main road from Elizalde Property to CityMall and the completion of the circumferential road.
