Boracay hits 1.9 million tourists

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan — This resort island has already surpassed its tourist target for this year with a record-high 1.9 million visitors.

Data from Malay Municipal Tourism Office showed that a total 1,970,901 tourist visited the island from January to December 27 of this year.

Of the number, 1,035,080 are foreign tourists while 894,487 are domestic tourists and 41,334 are overseas Filipinos.

The latest data, according to Felix delos Santos, chief tourism officer of Malay has surpassed their target of 1.8 million tourists for the year.

Delos Santos said this year’s arrivals have increased by 14%. It is expected to further increase with a few days left before 2017 ends.

He said thousands of tourists are expected to spend their New Year in Boracay.

In 2016, Boracay received a total 1,725,483 tourists.

Meanwhile, Delos Santos attributed the increase to the rising number of cruise ship arrivals in Boracay and continued international promotions.

For 2018, more cruise ship arrivals are also expected in Boracay.

He said the good ties between the Philippines and China also helped in the increase in the number of Chinese tourists in Boracay.

Aside from Chinese, Koreans are also the top visitors on the island. (Boracay Informer)
